Can We Really Say Goodbye to Sluggish Internet?

Plus: What the Starry Station Means for Your Smart Home Installation

Hey, remember Aero? The company that made it possible to pluck cable signals directly from the air for free and easy access to TV content. They were pretty quickly put out of business when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of a number of television broadcasters that the service was tantamount to piracy. But now the guys behind Aero are back, and their latest company, dubbed Starry, could potentially put high-speed, wireless Internet access into your Delray Beach home.

According to CNET:

“The New York- and Boston-based startup… hopes to create fresh competition for major cable and telecommunications players that sell broadband Internet… If Starry’s promise of delivering a 1-gigabit connection, or 10 times the average home broadband speed, pans out, it could shake up the broadband industry.”

For all intents and purposes, the “Starry Station”, the company’s flagship product, works similarly to your average Wi-Fi router. By utilizing millimeter-wave technology – that’s the same tech the used in radar equipment – Starry may be able to fully transform your home internet.

To be clear, though, the Station is only one part of the greater whole. Starry will be launching a fixed-wireless broadband network later this year, and you’ll need the Starry Point if you want to connect to that. While they’re claiming the Point works with any Wi-Fi router, the Station will give you real-time health diagnostics on your Wi-Fi signal, and sports a snazzy touch-screen interface for easy adjustments.

So how will all of this affect your home security systems? Well, as we saw at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), your home safety will take a huge jump in the realm of Wi-Fi usage. Everything from streaming video smart doorbells to connected nursery products mean you’ll be putting an extra strain on your bandwidth in 2016.

CES even featured a Siri-operated voice command lock. That’s right, the same AI that keeps you organized and makes navigation a breeze will soon be helping keep your home safer. By using Apple’s voice command platform, the Kwikset Premis will simplify locking up the house through the technology that you already know and love.

Needless to say, Starry’s line of products may come in handy this year. In the coming months, we’ll keep track of further developments, and let you know if the Starry Station will actually be worth a look.
